Frequently Asked Questions About the Bolognese Dog and breed

If you are researching the Bolognese dog breed, looking for a reputable Bolognese breeder, or trying to understand grooming, health, and AKC registration, this guide provides accurate information from the American Bolognese Club, the official AKC Parent Club in the United States.

The American Bolognese Club (ABC) is the official parent club for the Bolognese breed in the United States. The club is dedicated to preservation, education, and responsible breeding of this rare Italian companion breed.

The ABC provides accurate breed information, supports ethical breeding practices, and serves as a resource for owners, breeders, judges, and individuals interested in learning more about the Bolognese.
The American Bolognese Club does not sell puppies. The club provides education and guidance to help prospective owners understand the breed and connect with responsible breeders.

The Bolognese is a small companion breed from Italy, known for its white coat and stable, people-oriented temperament. Historically bred as a close household companion, the breed has remained relatively rare.
Adult Bolognese dogs typically weigh between 6–10 pounds and stand approximately 10–12 inches tall at the shoulder. They are small but sturdy, with a balanced, square build.

Bolognese dogs are affectionate and adaptable. They bond closely with their owners and do best in homes where they are included in daily life. They are not typically well-suited for households where they are left alone for long hours on a regular basis.

When properly socialized, they generally do well with families, singles, and seniors. Due to their small size, children should be taught to handle them gently.

With responsible breeding and proper care, Bolognese dogs typically live 12–14 years or more.

No dog is completely hypoallergenic. However, the Bolognese is a low-shedding breed, which may make them more suitable for some individuals with allergies. Reactions vary from person to person.

The Bolognese has a long, continuously growing coat that requires regular brushing to prevent tangles and maintain its natural texture.
There are two common grooming approaches:
Companion (shorter) cut:  Most pet owners choose a shorter maintenance trim. Companion dogs are typically groomed every 4–7 weeks, depending on coat length and lifestyle. Even in a shorter cut, it is important to preserve the look of the breed by leaving the hair on the head, muzzle, ears, and tail longer and maintaining a soft, natural outline.
Exhibitor (show) groom:  For dogs shown in the ring, the coat should appear natural and rustic. It should not be blown straight or sculpted into an artificial shape. Trimming may be done to highlight the dog’s natural build, but it must not create an illusion. Any trimming should be completed well before entering the show ring so that it is not obvious.
The Bolognese is meant to maintain a natural appearance. Grooming should enhance the breed’s authentic form, not alter it.

Prospective owners should work with responsible breeders who prioritize health, temperament, structure, and long-term breed preservation.

Responsible breeding is essential to protect the future of the Bolognese. Ethical breeders focus on health testing, thoughtful breeding decisions, proper care, and placing puppies in suitable homes.

When you bring home a Bolognese puppy, the paperwork can feel overwhelming. Here is a brief explanation to help clarify the process.

Your breeder will provide you with an American Kennel Club (AKC) registration form. This form is important. Registering your dog helps document the number of Bolognese dogs in the United States and supports the long-term future of the breed. We strongly encourage all owners to complete and submit their AKC registration.

You may also receive a membership application for the American Bolognese Club, the official AKC Parent Club for the breed. Membership is optional and separate from AKC registration.

Membership includes annual dues. Full details about benefits, requirements, and the application process can be found here:  https://americanbologneseclub.com/abc-membership

We welcome new owners who are interested in supporting preservation and education efforts. Membership requires submitting an application and approval by the Board of Directors.
